About RSPB Havergate Island Nature Reserve

RSPB Havergate Island Nature Reserve is a small but ecologically significant island located in the estuary of the River Alde and River Ore on the Suffolk coast of England. Managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the reserve covers approximately 230 hectares of saltmarsh, lagoons, and mudflats which provide essential breeding and feeding grounds for a diverse range of coastal bird species. The island was formed from three smaller islands joined together through extensive habitat restoration and sea defense work, which has allowed it to become one of the premier saltmarsh reserves in the UK. Key bird species include breeding avocets, marsh harriers, little egrets, and various waders migrating through the site. The reserve also supports populations of orchids and saltmarsh plants. Visitors can enjoy guided walks and seasonal birdwatching hides positioned to offer up-close views of rare and protected birds. Access to the island is by boat from the nearby town of Orford. The remote, peaceful ambiance makes it an outstanding destination for nature lovers and photographers interested in dynamic coastal habitats and wildlife observation. Havergate Island plays a crucial role in coastal biodiversity and flood defense within the region, enhancing both environmental value and visitor appeal.
